social media marketing: how to choose your platform?

how to select social media platform for personal branding

If you are thinking to enter the trending world of social media, then you would meet many platforms to invest your time, energy and resources in. So how do you decide which platform to opt for and which one to put lesser efforts in?

The process is simple and interesting. Read the steps below:

  1. Know Your Intentions Right
It is important to know your intentions and purpose behind coming on the social network. For sure, everyone wants a good number of followers; but what actually your message has to be that it impacts millions of people, this question you need to address. Personal branding as a concept is popular like never before, you would want to dig in and begin your journey, but introspecting your strong points can help you in the long run. Planning is relevant at all times. You could be amazing with your content writing or your verbal communication skills, your photography or graphic designing skills, and so on. So know what would be your plan of action, and what would you like to share with the world? The moment you are sure about yourself, the world is gonna be sure about you. So the very first step is self-reflection.

How your intentions help you define your platform?

Once you have started giving thought to your passion and strengths; you need to understand which platform would suit your energy?

Facebook is more like a universal social media platform, which delivers well on video and graphical content even today.
Twitter is good with content writing and marketing using relevant hashtags and short yet crisp storytelling experiences.
LinkedIn is valuable from a professional point of view. If you are a serious person and have no memes to share regularly, then you can gain a good audience that would resonate with your thoughts. You can spend time creating useful, relevant and valuable information or perspectives through the means of status updates and articles.
Pinterest is a picture-friendly platform just like Instagram, where it helps you link your articles or websites through the pictures. It is good for photographers and media outlets.
Instagram is an all-favourite and mandatory platform these days and youngsters have mastered its algorithm right; i.e., creating engaging content that sparks communication, on point. It has more features than Pinterest. Instagram offers 4 surfaces of content posting in the form of, i) Feed Post, ii) Stories, iii) IGTV, iv) IG Live
Youtube is perfect for long-format video tellers and benefits you from the SEO point of view as well, since it is owned by Google, the biggest search engine in the world.
Quora is amazing for writers. Your words can help you reach out to masses because you’re trying to help answer doubts and questions of people. Choose a particular topic (aka niche) that you hold good knowledge about and start blogging on Quora. You can create authority with your messages and story-telling experiences.

Take my advice and choose only one platform is you are just starting out. Okay, you could have accounts made on multiple platforms but spend time mastering one platform; because time and energy are precious in the beginning. These platforms can also require some spending from you in the form of advertisement, but that is solely your wish. Organic traffic in 2020 is amazing on LinkedIn, Quora and somewhere Instagram as well (if you are good with your organic marketing.)

  2. Re-read point number 1
Yes, the 2nd point is to read point number 1 again because from there, I take you towards the final stage of choosing your platform.

I talked somewhere about choosing your niche, i.e., one topic you have good knowledge and want to develop your authority in. You should not keep changing your niche every now and then, it is not advisable since it can mislead your audience and they might get irritated. Keep separate professional and personal account if you have to put out your views on almost every other thing happening on the planet. Use your personal account to talk on general topics, while keeping up to your niche in your professional account. Choose a topic however narrow it may be; because it is an advantage to become a master in one specific topic than in the complete industry, that too when you’re beginning your journey.

  3. Choose your platform
Now, enough of thinking is done already. Now you will be in a good position to pick up a platform for yourself. Follow your favourite creators or industry experts. See how they are going about their content creation and what kind of response they are getting. Now it is your turn to keep the ball rolling.

I hope this helps you in choosing the right social media platform for yourself. If you have any questions then please comment below or message me on Instagram
