The New Indian Democracy: Bus Democracy

I still remember what my SPL teacher taught me, “India is the largest democracy in the world”. He taught me about our great constitution and about the heroic struggles of our freedom fighters.

I found it very fascinating that I live in the world’s largest democracy and we are successors of such heroes who fought for our independence. But, today after seeing the condition and priorities of our government during this Covid Pandemic, I’m very disappointed with my teacher because he never told me that our leaders can easily ruin our votes by Horse trading. He never told me that money and greed of throne can overrule public’s decision. Yes, there are many rules to stop this practice but the rules have huge loopholes and the clever sycophants of our foolish leaders  are masters in using them. This habit of Indian political parties do nothing but drag our country closer and closer to Bus Democracy.

There are many examples of forming a government by bus democracy. Let’s start with Bihar, the land of Lord Buddha, the state with the world’s oldest democracy (Vaishali).

Lalu Pd Yadav, RJD supreme, created a grand alliance after the huge defeat in 2014 general election. Indian National Congress and Janta dal (U) were in Lalu Yadav’s grand alliance. The great alliance or Mahagathbandhan won the legislative election of 2015 with clear majority. Mr. Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar. But unfortunately the greed for more power of Mr. Kumar resulted in broke-up of Great alliance on 26 Jul 2017. Mr. Nitish joined hands with BJP and formed his government in 14 hours after the great breakup of great alliance.

Here is a fast forward and we are in 2019. Karnatka is all set to face the consequences of the greed of thrones.

In Karnataka, 16 MLAs, including Housing minister MTB Nagraj resigned and two independent MLAs had withdraw their support from the INC JD coalition government, after which the strength of coalition falls to 101 and BJP with 105+ 2 independent legislature formed its government in Karnataka.

The voters of Karnataka were coned and the rules were once again used as a weapon to overrule the decision of voters in Worlds largest democracy, India.

We are in 2020 and the state is Madhya Pradesh where 22 MLAs of Indian National Congress resigned after  Jyotiraditya Scindia exits the party. The former union minister resigned after meeting with PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.  The resign of 22 Congress’ lawmakers gave a chance to BJP to form their Government in MP led by CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

All this political drama during the starting phase of Covid Pandemic in India shows the priorities of our current government led by PM Modi

Now, we are in July 2020. Corona Pandemic was on its way to achieve it’s peak but in Rajasthan the greed of throne of our leaders is already on its peak. MLAs are being collected to stop horse trading and to prove the majority in Vidhan Sabha. Till now there are 18 MLAs with Ex Rajasthan PCC president Mr. Sachin Pilot and rest MLAs of Congress party are with CM Gehlot. CM Gehlot seems to be in good condition.

The thing that my teacher forgot to teach me is: “Greed of throne kills humanity as well as democracy.” Hope he now doesn’t forgets to teach this important lesson to other students!!

Note: I’ve been using the word Bus democracy because in all the above mentioned cases MLAs are kept in a Bus and then sent to any Luxury Resorts like primary students are sent to Schools.
