Lebanon Is Burning And We Need To Listen

Lebanon is a country located on the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, seen as a site of the earliest human advancement, and a center of trade and cross-cultural interaction.

This country rose to fumes on August 4 when a vast explosion occurred in the capital city Beirut, leaving thousands struggling for their last breath. The impact of the same was devastating. Homes and buildings were destroyed, hospitals overwhelmed with patients, and ultimately running out of beds.

Having encountered civil war from 1975-1990, the forthcoming years have been pretty catastrophic for the Middle-East country.

Amid fighting a pandemic, it is also battling inflation, the inflation rate being the third highest in the world with thousands being on the brink of starvation. A moment of distress for domestic workers as they suffer major unemployment and lack of money in the times where prices of basic commodities are skyrocketing.

Lebanon, with its high literacy rate and is a traditional mercantile culture, has been a focus of economic activity, however, the Lebanese Pound has collapsed by 80%, creating a considerable downfall for the economy. To make it worse is the expected second wave of the deadly coronavirus.

The healthcare system lacks funds and infrastructure, and not appropriate to equip the entire nation. Let’s not neglect the plea of our neighbouring countrymen and let the poor and vulnerable souls perish. Let’s not turn Lebanon into the next Syria or Palestine.
