The Issue Of The Ghazipur Landfill

I have been staying in Vasundhra Enclave for around thirteen years now. Located close to the Ghazipur landfill site which has  for the last few years become a constant irritant. Filth generated by the belching of gases like methane and nitrogen deeply impacts and affects our health. It is especially harmful for those of us who are already suffering from one or another form of co-morbidity, weakening our immune and respiratory systems.

The Ghazipur Landfill

Apart from this, there are a range of issues which become hard to avoid if you happen to be a member of a gated condominium in this area. Many times, several Resident Welfare Associations have jointly written letters and applications to their MPs and MLAs seeking action. PILs and petitions have already been filed by individuals in their individual capacities too. Although, recently, the East Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir has swung into action. But I believe due to lack of co-ordination and co-operation with the local councillor and MLA the matter is till at a standstill.

This site has become a haven for birds of prey, ruining the lives and livelihoods of those staying within close proximity. Some have been diagnosed with chronic health ailments forcing them to relocate to other places.

What does this all mean for an ordinary person? Shouldn’t there be a clarity offered by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation regarding the resolution on this?

We would surely like to hear their version as to what steps have been taken so far. How did they allow for this landfill in the first place? It’s time we made them pull up their socks.

I believe, for our  best interests to prevail, the AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar and the BJP MP Gautam Gambhir should keep aside their conflicting interests and do what’s in their capacity to get us out of this situation.
