Dissent

Our constitution talks about freedom of speech as a fundamental right of the citizen. But how well are we able to use it for oneself? There have been numerous times when people have been stopped from using their voice on various matters at public grounds.

The recent news of Prashant Bhushan regarding the violation of freedom of speech under the constitution in the 1971 Act makes us realize how the freedom of speech is not actually applicable.

Freedom of having an opinion towards a topic shouldn’t be termed as a violation of the law as anyone can have his or her opinion. It can differ with a few and can be accepted by a few, it can be wrong too but having an opinion over anything cannot be termed as violation of the law.

It is high time we all acknowledge it and start accepting it. Freedom of speech is essential to the functioning of a healthy democracy. Dissent cannot be contemptuous and we should have the right to voice our criticism and love alike for the country we inhabit.
