We have seen the Bois locker room thing that went on for a while. On this popular social media platform called Instagram, a few boys started molesting and writing cheap comments on girls’ photos. But if we go beyond this, there is one ‘big defaming locker room’ incident that happened outside social media. The group is handling by few men and some political leaders of our society. This group don’t know what’s wrong and what’s right!
In this write up, I am going talk about Safoora Zargar. She is a student of Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi. She was the one who started a protest against the implementation of CAA and NRC along with her fellow students. She protested outside her university ‘non-violently’, but some local mobsters destroyed public property under the false name of Jamia students. She was also seen at a women-led protest in Shaheen Bhag.
During Trump’s visit to India, a pogrom took place on Delhi streets. There were a few political leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who provoked people to indulge in such violence. At that time, there was fear in every person living in Delhi. The actual twist comes in the story now.
Two weeks after the lockdown was implemented in India due to COVID-19, the police arrested Umar Khalid, Safoora Zargar and Meeran Haider under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). The police arrested them without any concrete crucial evidence against them.
Safoora Zargar was two months pregnant at that time. When she got arrested, a few BJP leaders tweeted a false report of her test. They said that the police had found that she was two months pregnant when they were taking her corona test. The leaders and their so-called followers started the rumour that she has the ability to get pregnant without having intercourse.
They also tweeted about how can a girl get pregnant before marriage. They started questioning her character. Some people even posted a clip of Arabic porn with a false claim that it was a ‘Hindu’ man having sex with Zargar at Shaheen Bagh. Many false accusations were made on her character that tried to defame her reputation.
Let us be very clear: a girl can have sex before her marriage. This doesn’t mean that people have to make such bad comments on her character. But this was not the case with Zargar. She has been married since 2018. After seeing all the fake news, Alt News verified the story of Safoora Zargar and found out that she is married. They talked to her husband, and her parents told Alt News that they had mentioned in the PIL filed for their daughter that she was two months pregnant. She was on bed rest and working from home due to this lockdown and uneasiness. Alt news also verified the story of the Arabic porn video that was falsely circulated by people, giving the name of Zargar.
She is on bail as of now on the basis of humanitarian grounds. But the bail also contains conditions like she cannot go outside or meet anyone without the permission of the Court. This shows how power has taken over such voices that speak for the welfare of people. There is nothing wrong in asking questions and protesting against any Act that can harm people’s life.
Her parents tried their best to get her out of prison. People need to understand the difference between riots and protests. They don’t have to defame anyone after their leaders doing the same. Not just Safoora Zargar, there were several other students whom the police arrested during this lockdown. Currently, they are in Tihar jail.
