Poem : The Dreamland

Malayalam magazine Grihalakshmi received a lot of criticism after they featured a woman model, Gilu Joseph, posing like she was breastfeeding a baby who is not her own. According to the magazine, the campaign aimed at increasing public breastfeeding and breaking the taboo surrounding the issue.

A sweet baby lives her life, as it’s meant to be,

Trying to find peace of mind, she sets her eyes on the calmness of the blue sea,

As the day ends and the sun begins to set,

She watches all the birds on their way back,

Then the night falls with its deception of rest,

Sweet baby tries to sleep, but some things keep coming back.

She closes her eyes and delves into the fantasy world,

She sees many things which only she could,

She sees a place full of love and happiness,

She sees angels taking her out from the darkness,

I can see her face; she’s an angel herself,

I want to feel her touch and caress,

It seems like she belongs in the Dreamland,

She sees many faces giving her a helping hand,

She wants to sing, she wants to dance.

As I see her sleeping, lost in her fantasies,

Away from the world of secrets, lies, and jealousy,

For her, though it’s only an illusion it still feels like reality,

She loves her dreams, as she tells me,

That’s the only place where she wants to be,

Though she’s far away from me,

Dreams bring her closer and I touch her lovingly.

As long her eyes are closed,

Dreamland fills her with hope,

The place where everything is right, nothing is wrong,

But sweet baby dreams can only last so long.

As the sun begins to rise and you open your beautiful eyes,

Wondering where all the blissful moments have faded away to,

The Reality now bites hard her on her face,

But don’t lose heart; you are not alone in this phase.

I wish all your dreams come true,

God’s love and my wishes will take you through!
