An India Where Criticism Is Presumed To Be Contempt

Freedom of Speech and Expression is enshrined under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India. However, this right has some reasonable restrictions. It has been one of the most vital freedoms a citizen enjoys. Life would have been more complicated had the same been not put in. With the successive governments, this has been gradually flattened as it exposes the corrupt. Individuals and journalists dissenting against the centre through various platforms are booked under relevant sections to muzzle their voice.

The Prashant Bhushan Contempt of Court case is the perfect example where criticism is presumed as contempt. Dissent is not restricted under the freedom of speech and expression. But, the events today say a different story where even the courts have been justifying these arrests through their silence on certain matters. However, on the flip side, one must bear in mind Freedom is not the licence to abuse.

So, how secure are we with our freedom?
