Quick Byte: What Do You Do When Someone You Know Is Diagnosed With HIV?

Don’t be so surprised to find an HIV +ve profile. There are probably many +ve people around you. It could be your colleague, your vegetable vendor, your doctor, the businessman you just inked a deal with, or the guy you just slept with who didn’t tell you he was positive! The yummy food you just relished last weekend may have been prepared by an HIV +ve chef … think of it!

Don’t be weird towards HIV +ve guys if you know their status. They are just ordinary people like you. Don’t be judgemental!

Most HIV +ve guys work hard, play hard and contribute to their workplace, societies and families just as normal people do, despite managing the extra medication, the associated costs and the social stigma of HIV in India.

You will NOT GET INFECTED by hugging an HIV +ve person, by sharing spoons, or by using the same toilet. The only way you can get infected are: Sexual transmission, Blood transfusion, and Mother-to-child. So, if anyone in your family or friend circle is diagnosed as +ve, hug them, make them feel wanted. They sure can use your moral support during the initial tormenting period!

Get tested regularly if you are sexually active and stay safe. Most HIV+ve guys may not realize that they are positive for years together, and may unintentionally spread the virus by having unprotected sex. So please get tested, not just for your own health, but also for the safety of those in contact with you.

Also, although some scientific literature says that unprotected oral sex is relatively safe, you must realize that the keyword is “relatively” and not “absolutely“! I know that oral sex with a condom ain’t no fun, but trust me when I say it’s better to be safe.
