The fact that girls need to ‘sleep early’, they need to ‘sit properly’, and especially ‘dress properly’, and that these will define their character, or whether or not they fall into the category of ‘good’ or ‘bad’ girls is the most fatuous thing.
Earlier, in 2015, he compared BJP MP Shazia Ilmi and Kiran Bedi, as to who is more ‘beautiful’. He said, “I regard Shazia Ilmi much more beautiful than Kiran Bedi. If BJP had made Shazia their C.M. candidate they would definitely have won the Delhi elections. People vote for beautiful faces, as in Croatia. Even a person like me who does not normally vote ( because I regard almost all Indian politicians as rogues and scoundrels ) would have voted for Shazia!”
Moral of this incident is that we need to be more beautiful and attractive in order to win an election because only being attractive will solve all the problems the country is facing and help us develop, right?
In December 2014, he opposed gay marriage saying “A woman has to get hold of a man, not merely to make her pregnant, but also to look after her and provide for her financially while she is performing this role.” and to further make a case he said, “Women who remain single are prone to have psychological problems.”
The fact that he suggested the sole purpose of marriage is to get pregnant is really absurd. A single woman can achieve a lot in her life and career, she doesn’t need a man to support her financially. His opinion on gay marriage doesn’t change the love and affection that two men or women feel for each other.
Coco Chanel, the legendary designer (1883-1971) who forever changed the world of fashion, opted to remain single her whole life.
“I remember when I was young I honestly believed in some ridiculous way that you would find someone who would be the person you lived with until you died,” said Diane Keaton. “I don’t think that because I’m not married it’s made my life any less. That old maid myth is garbage.”
Jane Austen (1775-1817) may be a master of literary romance (and has even been dubbed the ‘mother of chick-lit,’), but she herself never married. She was once engaged briefly, but she ultimately opted to remain single and dedicate her life to her work. These women are perfect examples to counter comments which imply that single women are prone to have some kind of psychological problems.
On the other hand, mental health is a joke in this country. People Attribute a life choice made by women to some mental illness. And also, how is this even related to marriage? A single woman who wants to raise a child can simply adopt or explore the various options of advanced sciences. She doesn’t need to get to be married for that.
So, can we please stop laughing at his comments and call out this sexism?
