Farm Bills: “How Can A Few Control Our Fate And Take Us For Granted?”

Former Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Industries, Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

I believe everybody is in a rush to pick their spot in the ongoing tussle over the farmer issue. Activists and leaders are, at best, making attempts to seal their berths. If not for the Centre’s hurry to legislating the farm ordinance, we could have made the move to send the bill to a select Parliamentary Committee.

Apart from this, taking into consideration the opposing views and dissenting voices, what explains the objection of SAD (Shrimoni Akali Dal), an important ally of the BJP, to these bills?

I suppose that Harsimrat Kaur Badal could have certainly managed to give her objections to this bill, but didn’t and instead, resigned from the Union Cabinet as the Food and Processing Minister. Last year, in November, the Shiv Sena left the Modi-led NDA government. Why are the NDA alliance members becoming so infuriated and impatient?

When it comes to representation and power-sharing, I understand that they are being heard and addressed. But, is there a catch when it comes to important bills and legislations that the concerns of the allies are often looked down by the BJP leadership? I am sure had it not been so, then the Centre would have reached out to the agitating farmers in Punjab and Haryana. But, they instead backed out and began counting on the merits of this bill, which practically made no point and purpose.

Restoring the pride of the farmer on the MSP front, apart from providing them with the adequate infrastructure, will override all the doubts surrounding this bill. The Centre ought to display their intent and willingness, and nothing more beyond it. How can a few control our fate and take us for granted? You being the leader of the house, Mr PM, please plead our case with full courage and conviction as you most often do.

Please don’t let us down as this bill, if finally made into the law, will put the lives of our farmers in peril.
