Can We Speak Our Mind In India Without Being Imprisoned?

Freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of that, freedom of this. Freedom is one of the most basic and significant values written and printed in our country’s bible – The Constitution. Our country provides the freedom to its citizens in different provisions and situations, and one of them is, the Freedom of Speech.

With Freedom of Speech, they aim at providing a safe space where an individual or a group can articulate their feelings and opinions without fear of retaliation, censorship or legal sanction. But how far, as an Indian, do you think this freedom is implemented to its most accurate form, or to which degree is it legalised to speak out our opinions in this country, without the fear of being imprisoned or targeted by social media in the current era?

Then why do they say that we have freedom? How can we speak our opinions to the people out there without being imprisoned or coming out unscathed?

Our generation has been a part of many horrific incidences, unlike other generations. Hence, the need to outspeak our views and opinions to the majority is the need of the hour.

As a fellow youth, there have been times I get frustrated with the headlines of every day’s newspaper, the horrifying and gut-clenching news of what inhumane incidences occur in our day-to-day life. These all require a voice, such that people understand the seriousness of it. Much of the news goes unnoticed by the people because the required outrage is not provided to it.

But some people do speak out through various forms of art like music, films, standup-comedies, speakers, etc. They take up the confidence to talk all about it. They use their freedom of speech as well as freedom of expression to its most accurate form.

The way our country was asked to do in the constitution, but the result of it is, them being imprisoned or targetted by the higher authorities of our country. Then why do they say that we have freedom? How can we speak our opinions to the people out there without being imprisoned or coming out unscathed?

For me, freedom of speech is one of those areas which needs significant reform. One of the major constraints is not harming anybody with words. Seeing to it, one should be able to speak out, for the good of others, for informing others, etc., without being harmed in any way. It is one of the other milestones we, as a country, have to overcome and come out as one.
