Quick Byte: The Country That Worships Goddess, Doesn’t Treat Women Respectfully

rape culture

TW: Gangrape, Casteism, Caste-based atrocities, Graphic

We are all shaken by the very recent news of the 19-year-old girl, allegedly gang-raped in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. While I write this I fall short of words – what do I write? Is it even going to make people realize how it is to look at the world from an oppressed and marginalised lens? Religion and caste have always played a huge role in Indian history, however, we like to believe that, with time, our minds too, have become much broader and acceptable towards annihilating caste.

The rampant casteism shows the inhumanity we still have within us, it shocked me when I heard the girl was raped and her tongue was slit. A 19-year-old girl had gone through so much and died but here comes the role of our very great policemen who – inorder to make the dead girl and her family’s life miserable cremated the body at midnight without even letting the family see her one last time.

UP Police forcefully burnt her body and did not even let her family see her, one last time.

We would never know the pain the family and the girl faced. Is India actually changing to a better India? Uttar Pradesh is one of the most populated and largest states of India, most crimes occur here, who do we blame for it? There are thousands of cases which don’t even come under the limelight. I want to ask all those men who believe rape happens because of the way a girl dresses up or because she is out at night, what was her fault? Was it being born a Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh? India is a country of worshipping Goddesses, yet, we don’t even look at a woman respectfully.

It is high time we change our mindset and try to acknowledge humanity and identify rape culture and undo it. We need to stop sexualising and objectifying women!
