Media Is Supposed To Be The Greatest Example Of Democracy In India, But Is It?

Is media the greatest example of democracy in India? Its freedom is further enhanced by Article 19 (1)(a) that is the freedom of speech and expression. But over a couple of years, it has gone biased in various forms- some towards TRP and some politically and some towards TRP. Media should enhance good ideology in a country and should question if it goes wrong. But is this what happens in our country? Is it not biased?

In recent times, the practice of paid news has over headed our country. Only interesting concerns are being discussed and people’s issue have been left behind. With rising corona cases, media just talks about  Sushant Singh’s suicide and drug usage in Bollywood and never considers the 1000+ deaths due to corona each day which is a national concern.

Even if some of the media houses or journalists want to provide true information to the public, they are always being shut by the threat calls or intimidation. Many times, these truths are wrapped by the government in acts of censorship during a situation akin to a national emergency. This was upheld during the national emergency of 1975 by Indira Gandhi’s government. However, this was ruled out later but still exists in some form of media like movies.

Coming to Mr Modi who emerged to be the saviour of the country since 2014, well, he is attacking the freedom of the press. India’s free press has always played an important role in protecting the democracy of the country, but ever since the Modi government has come into existence, the word free or liberal or control-free press has become a myth to the media. His government has tried to control every news media by threatening or by regulating them in various different ways by cutting off broadcasting or by blocking the entire channel for days.

So it’s very clear that democracy has not bloomed much because of media due to powerful political parties and for the profit of investors. So it is our time to think and act.
