Quick Byte: Will We Find A Cure For The Epidemic That Is Rape?

TW: Rape, sexual assault.

A protest took place in Kolkata against the alleged rape, torture, and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, India. On September 29, a 19-year-old woman died of injuries after she was allegedly raped by a group of men in a field in Hathras district, in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Reading something like this never feels right! It makes me wonder why our democracy is so wounded. Rape cases never seem to reduce. Its always there. Economy falls due to pandemic but Rape cases do not. How does this make sense to anyone? Is it so easy? Why does the criminal have no fear of our system?

When people did not follow the lockdown they were beaten just to keep them safe from the virus. Yet, women, on the other hand, are raped and the criminal gets bail? The virus might kill us but hopefully, we will find a cure. But what about the virus which is already feasting on the life of women?

I personally don’t think there is any cure for that. Being a girl is never going to be a safe experience in India. So, I think its time that we add self-defence to our school curriculum as a compulsory subject. Its time to make the women strong, because, stronger men are no good. A friend, husband, uncle, grandad or even dad. No one can protect us. Its time for the women to take charge and protect themselves. Let’s face the fact that democracy isn’t really doing anything good for women.
