Hathras: “My Heart Weeps, My Body Shivers”

TW: Rape

As I write this I sincerely think- is it going to make any difference to the society and the cheap minds of the people? My heart weeps, my body shivers, it pains differently each time I hear about such incidents. Believe me, our status update makes no difference. Nothing has changed from Nirbhaya to the girl in Hathras. Every time any incident takes place, people get infuriated, there are a lot of story updates coupled with a lot of criticism, candle marches and what not but the result we get is a big zero.

The truth is that society won’t change and neither will the people. Nothing makes a person change themselves unless they themselves want to. My dear girls out there, take care of yourself because on one else will do it for you. People will stop you and at times, they may blame you but they won’t ever allow you to push yourself to fight all odds. They won’t ever allow you to stand for yourself in front of everyone if someone looks at you with an ill intention.

I am an 18-year-old girl. I understand what it feels like when someone has an offensive intention about you. I can feel every girl who has ever been through any such incident of eve-teasing or any other such happening. Passing comments on girls, eve-teasing, body shaming -these incidents can leave the girls in depression for a long period of time. Just imagine, what kind of mental damage rape can do?

I feel so sad that we even need to discuss such things. They should have never even existed. I feel that it’s a bigger evil than Covid-19 itself. We talk about educating girls and protecting them. Seriously? This is something that the girls already deserve. It’s a basic human right, not something we need to ask and strive for.

My heart aches as I pen down thing. I would like to put a full stop to my words now.

HOPE WE WIN.
