“People Are Okay With Inter-Caste Marriages, Just Not In Their Own Homes”

By Amruta Khanderao

What is marriage? It is a bond between two people. Two human beings come together according to their needs and live together forever.

Now why marriage is needed? For security. Here I mean all types of security. Economic security, mental and physical security, and to fulfil the sexual needs of each other. In Indian society, the above things are managed to be done with dignity. People think about their social and economic status while arranging marriages. So the faith is compulsorily considered. In the old days, all these things were considered and implemented but nowadays there are a number of complications in the marriage system.

The changes, I feel, started taking place after women’s education and empowerment. Women started to think about all types of needs. If the needs are not fulfilled they started to reject the traditional compulsions. They started to enjoy their freedom more than the family bondings.

Marriage always needs a compromise. But women reject compromise because they only have to face trouble while compromising. Now they are asking men to share and to compromise in all parts of life. But society is not ready to accept these changes which are unavoidable.

When you wish to educate your daughter, wish to make her life self reliant, you forget that other people too thinking about the same things for their daughters. You want to make your daughter’s life happy but you never expect the same for your daughter-in-law. You want a girl should be independent but you are not ready to let her handle her own problems. You are not ready to allow her to live her life. How is it possible?

Things are changing fast. But the people are not changing their views. They are biased. They appreciate an intercaste marriage in the neighbours’ house. But they strictly avoid in their own home.

Marriage should be kept away from traditions and compulsions. Attraction, love, the need for security and stability are the basic things behind marriage. In India, a marriage is a bonding between two families. Not between two humans.

Young people can easily change this. The girls should take initiative in doing so. Whatever may happen, but the most important thing is that marriage is a responsibility. If you are not able to carry the responsibility, do not take it on yourself. Don’t get yourself involved and don’t get others involved.
