Dear Youth, Time’s Up, Let’s Talk About Feminism

Why is it important to talk about education on feminism? We live in the 21st century, it has been decades since the movement started. Even then, there is a ‘stir of anti-feminism’ in the air. I cannot stress this point enough- Educate yourself before you take to a social media platform to talk about such a sensitive issue. And a point that needs to be addressed is that being a feminist is not a choice.

Do Not Post About A Sensitive Issue Without Educating Yourself On It

If you choose not to be a feminist, you choose to be someone who does not believe in equality of the genders. For the record, Feminism is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define, establish, and achieve the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes.

In a recent video, an 18-year-old talks about how she is against today’s feminism. If I may clarify, this article is not to make anyone feel violated or attacked, rather it is a wake-up call for the people who generally support wrong ideas and spread false information. When people confuse necessary and valid movements with poor understanding and execution of the movement, the site of destruction is not far.

When someone says they have spent a considerable amount of time of about 730 days researching on a topic so close to them, it automatically makes them a credible source who people can rely on. And then they go ahead and confuse feminism with pseudo feminism and misandry?  The problems that were talked about in the video, fall under the category of the latter.

Time Is Actually And Genuinely Up, Understanding Feminism Is A Must

I agree it is a problem that needs to be dealt with. I also want to point out that each and every feminist who truly knows what the movement stands for, will never ever be ignorant of the fact that every single gender faces discrimination and that every single human being, regardless of their diversities, genders, differences, deserves a voice and equal treatment.

Feminism stands for equality of all genders

It scares me that people support the ideology of anti-feminism. Don’t say you’re against feminism because that is the sole reason why women have achieved equality and rights to post a video and voice their opinion. Do not disrespect the very thing that has helped you advocate your beliefs just like the male counterpart of the population does.

Moving on to a more generic discussion, I feel that time is actually and genuinely up now. It is absolutely heart wrenching how we still need to correct people and define feminism. The discussion that needs to be going on in today’s day and age is how to structure stricter laws for the protection of the genders, practical and fieldwork on issues like educating girls in rural areas, helping to end period poverty, the much important discussion on ending female genital mutilation, abortion crisis and the list goes on and on.

Let’s Clear The Air Around Feminism

While these issues are being talked about, the number of people who want to get educated about them is limited. This arises from the root of the problem i.e. people don’t know what feminism is. Neither do they understand how important it is to get educated on it? The importance and gravity of it can be understood by people once false information is out of the way.

Being educated and having access to information at the click of a button is reason enough for each one of us as part of the youth community to stay informed. There is absolutely no reason to stay oblivious, uninformed, and ignorant about issues of concern like this. It affects all of us. As I stated earlier, this article is not to make anyone feel violated or attacked, rather it is a plea to the youth and every single, uninformed, and “anti-feminist” individual to wake up. Because, this time, Time’s genuinely up.
