People very fondly share Keanu Reeves’ photographs in which he is travelling by metro and go gaga over his simplicity. But let me tell you how they treat someone who practices this simplicity in real life.
When I tell them that I would travel by metro(I am phobic to driving and couldn’t learn despite many efforts and can’t afford a driver) they start judging my lifestyle and for them, you are someone less privileged. Then if I openly talk about using public transport, their facial expressions become judgemental and on top of it, if I tell them that I am heading an organisation, the first reaction I get is disbelief because if I am heading an organisation, I must be having a chauffeur-driven car!
If you wear simple clothes, every effort of your existence is a waste because you are not glamorous enough.
If your conversations do not have keywords like ‘flights, brands, cars, money, meetings’ then you are looked down upon because the keywords that are supposed to make you “look rich” or “high profile” aren’t there.
This concept is years old where respect is decided by how rich you look irrespective of your real achievements. In India especially, there exists this culture where we consider people from abroad to be high profile and accomplished. Even if the clothes are from Sarojini and are glamorous, they are cool. Now the same thing applies to the world as well.
People with more likes on their pages start behaving like celebrities and feel ashamed in being around or being supportive of anyone’s work if the person is virtually not active or “socially engaged” as they call it.
Even today, unless I hand over my visiting card which has my designation(and hence my hard-earned success – see I have to mention that), I see people looking down upon me because of my simplicity.
The moral of this story is that even if you want your simplicity to be respected, you need to be rich in this country because people are hypocrites. And there is nothing to be happy about it. This shows how genetically degraded we are as a society and as human beings. Total failures. A society which doesn’t respect simplicity is flying high at a dangerous level and would fall down very very soon.
Don’t tell me how simple Keanu Reeves is because I know how you treat those around you who follow simplicity in life. Most of you would find yourself guilty of judging, demeaning, belittling and at times even bullying.
However, since childhood, I have never given up on my simple living to please anyone nor would I ever do that. I only wanted to try and point out the double standards of these smiling happy motivating faces.
