It’s 2020. What Are We Doing To Address Violence Against Women?

TW: Assault, domestic violence.

For years women have been worshipped and respected for various things. India is a country where Ma Durga and various other goddesses are worshipped every day. But, are the women of this country safe enough?

It is a sad fact to accept, but the harsh reality is that every year, thousands of women are molested or raped. Women aren’t safe anywhere, from their house to their workplace. It’s like women are meant to remain scared every second. Very recently, we heard about the Hathras case, and the Nirbhaya case before that, but even after so much outrage and anger, there hasn’t been much change.

When the whole world was mourning the deaths of their family members because of the pandemic, India recorded a high number of cases of domestic violence along with many rape cases. And these just include cases the government has on record, and there can be thousands of other women who couldn’t report it.

India has been a developing country and has come a long way in every sphere, but the most important question which arises is this: when are we going to give women the respect they deserve?

Worshipping a goddess and then assaulting women in real life doesn’t make anyone a good person, but just shows how ignorant and evil they are. There have been so many instances of men staring at women and girls so much they feel unsafe in a public place, of women being hit by their husband, a girl being teased on the road by men, these keep happening every day and in different parts of our country and are neglected each day.

We are ready to be modern, to have fun in life, but that doesn’t give any men the right to force himself on women. What a woman wears or with whom a women parties don’t give anyone the right to judge her ‘character’. We are ready to accept the ‘western world’ but we are not ready to evolve our brains and let women wear what they want and not judge their character through it.

Violence against women just goes to show how disrespectful and evil one’s mind can be to do something which can harm another human. Women don’t need an equal place with men, women want the equal respect and help a man would give a man. Due to the pandemic and the lockdown, we’ve been hearing people talk about how they have learned to help their wife in the housework. There have also been men who have treated their wives in the worst ways possible, and this needs to change.

If we want our country to grow and develop, it is important to understand that a woman is equally important in a society and her consent has to be respected by every man of the country.
