Immorality, Corruption, Violence: Are We Worth Living In This Society?

“Saathi haath badhana, saathi haath badhana,
ek akela thak jayega, mil kar bhoj uthana,
saathi haath badhana, saathi haath badhana..”

These lines will surely make all of us realise how vital humanity is in society.

“Drunk men sexually harasses woman”, “Dalit farm worker beaten to death”

Umm, and these lines; well, they show the value crisis that is happening.

Child labour, rapes, domestic violence, discrimination, caste inequality, gender inequality — welcome to the era where morality and ethics cease to exist; what exists is brutality in our societal behaviour. But the fact is that it isn’t the absence of values or conscience that prevents us from being like this, it is simply the lack of moral courage.

We live in a country where, when required to speak up, we get tongue-tied, but after the transgression, we come up with posters and candles in our hands and start protesting. Prime time news channels have their so-called ‘serious debates’ in which, more than the exchange of  opinions and solutions, we see personal attacks and party politics. I fail to understand the psychology of humans. Why are we becoming like this? Why do we find pleasure in oppressing someone, in torturing them, killing them? Is this why we are called the most ‘intelligent’ species in the world?

Genuinity doesn’t exist anymore and people are living a life of ignorance and fakeness. We are becoming corrupt and that doesn’t affect us anymore. Earlier, a corrupt and an unethical person was shunned by society, but now, it seems normal if someone’s doing anything wrong. We all want to be a great person, we want people to change, but just ask yourself a question — have you ever tried putting in an effort to achieve that?

Have you ever tried changing your own bad habits? Well, you seem to be in a predicament now, because we all know the answer to these questions. But again, we don’t want to admit it. India was once known for its morals and values, but all those are now in a closed book with dust covered all over it. Realising the lost worth of ethics and opening this closed book is the need of the hour and so it is to remove the dust from our society. No one knows if mankind will ever come to an end, but what’s sure is if we don’t introspect our doings in the society NOW, the civilization ahead will not be possible and we will be the reason of our own ruin.
