The United Nations (UN) has launched many informative initiatives during the pandemic to ensure public awareness of domestic violence, like the Shadow Pandemic Campaign.
The chief aim is to focus on the global increase in domestic violence amid the COVID-19 crisis and to look at the productive measures to thwart violence against women.
- Before the pandemic, one in three women faced physical or sexual oppression by mostly their partners. But, after the pandemic, there has been an alarming increase in the instances of violence.
- Â The reason for such instances can range from the denial of movements lodged by the government, isolation and insecurity, economic instability, and so on.
- Child marriage is also likely to increase at an alarming rate.
- Instances of genital mutilation are also increasing nowadays.
- Due to the current structure of work culture forced sex is likely to be accelerated by the intimate partner.
- Due to rampant dependency on social media, cybercrime is spotted everywhere.
- Reports of domestic violence have multiplied.
- Sexist remarks, gestures, and threats online are also intensifying.
That is why in the COVID awareness strategies, our government has tried to include a safety and awareness program for our women force from September of this year. Stringent action must be taken to combat these heinous crimes.
