Why Does The Length Of Her Dress Define A Woman’s Character?

Diversity is everything. Inclusion leads to understanding, demystification, destigmatisation. Fashion has the power to glorify bodies and identities — to include them in a narrative of luxury and beauty.

Was it my fault?
Was it because the length of my skirt was above the knees?
Did I unknowingly give the wrong signs?
Was it my fault that he thought I was leading him on?
Was it my fault that he interpreted my friendship and kindness for something else entirely?
No, it wasn’t!
The fault lies within the mentality and perception of society towards women.
Why are we viewed as nothing but mere objects?
Maybe, just maybe, if its outlook was different,
Thousands of girls like me would have a safer place to breathe in.

— A Girl

It is not the clothing that is inappropriate, it is the way you perceive it.

Recently, I saw a viral post on social media where a girl wearing a short dress received snarky comments from a ‘well-educated’ lady about how she deserves to get raped due to her clothing choice. The lady called her some very offensive and vile words. She stated that by wearing short dresses, the girl was inviting men to rape her.

It is quite pitiful that with all this advancement throughout the century, people still harbour the mindset of the 50s era. It is high time that people change the way they view the world. It is not the clothing that is inappropriate, it is the way you perceive it.

Why is it that people judge girls by what they wear? If a girl wears a short skirt, they categorise her as an uncultured girl. And if she wears clothes that cover her body, they categorise her as primitive. What I decide to wear is my personal choice: it may be jeans, skirts or a kurti. People who identify clothes with provocativeness need to unlearn stereotypical beliefs.

Since we are girls, society expects us to behave in a certain way. But why are we the only ones being told to cover up when we leave the house. Why don’t they tell boys to respect girls instead of harassing them?

What we wear does not define our character. People need to learn that.

If we need to change anything, it’s the way we think.
