What will be your reaction if I say that India ranks world’s most dangerous place for women?
I am not saying this, but a survey by Thomas Reuters Foundation says so. The survey was conducted by the organisation in 2018 and five perspectives were considered for the survey:
1. Religion and culture (issues related to acid attack, genital mutilation, child marriage, forced marriage, physical abuse and female foeticide)
2. Sexual violence (sexual harassment, rape cases and lack of access to justice in cases of rape)
3. Human trafficking (including forced marriage, sexual slavery and domestic servitude)
We call our country “Bharat Mata”, meaning motherland. The land we live in, the land that gives us food, the land that fulfills our basic amenities, the land that gives us everything is our Mata, the mother itself. This mother has now become the most dangerous for its daughters itself.
There is now a need to change. Being humans, we must bring a revolution around us and make people change their behaviour and thinking around women’s issues. We must also bring a change in what we are teaching our boys and girls.
For this, we, the common people of the country, are responsible somewhere. We don’t react when we see something wrong happening in front of us. We don’t like to openly talk about various social norms that are actually strongly, very, very wrong. All the social norms included in the perspective of the survey are not discussed openly, but still take place in reality. This proves that not saying something does not stop the wrong from happening.
We as youth have the responsibility to change the wrong that is happening outside.
