how Uttarakhand glacier burst?

Introduction:

The very unfortunate news has come from the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand where a part of the Nanda Devi glacier is broken which caused the flood. Until now 15 people have lost their lives and 100+ are missing and very heavy destruction have happened to two hydropower plants. This is not the first time, this has reminded us of the disaster of 2013 and it’s not the last event. In the coming time, this kind of disaster will be more frequent due to climate change.

We are not very clear that what happened in Chamoli and why. But some experts think that behind this disaster there is a phenomenon of GLOF (Glacial Lake outburst flood)

Let us try to understand.

What is a glacier?

The collection of a very huge amount of ice for a very long time in a particular area where that ice does not melt due to the climatic conditions of that area. Example mountain ?️ tops, Alaska and Iceland. Due to the regular deposit of ice, its weight increases continuously which leads to the movement of ice from m high altitude to a lower altitude, and due to the increase in temperature these glaciers start melting and that’s why they also become the origin of many rivers.

What is moraine formation?

In glacier movement, the soil, stone, etc also moves along with it and the kind of pattern formed by the glacier movement is known as moraine formation you can easily understand this picture given below.

And when this moraine formation or you can say a natural dam break down due to high pressure of water and ice these disasters take place.

Our contribution to these disasters.

– Melting speed of glaciers is doubled from 1975 to 2000 due to climate change.

– Deforestation on a very large scale.

– Projects such as the Char Dham Highway project is an ongoing project of the government that lies in the eco-sensitive area.

– Increase in carbon dioxide emission.

What is the solution?

– Strictly follow the Paris agreement. Which limits the carbon emissions of every member country.

– Afforestation. Roots of trees help in gathering the soil which also worked as a barrier for avalanches and landslides.

– No more construction of large dams that destroy the ecological balance of that particular area.

– Pre observation of glacial lakes and the situation for these disasters by using high-tech remote sensing technology.

– People should raise their voice against government projects which adversely affect the ecological balance of the country.
