Why Have We Forgotten To Be Kind To Ourselves During The Pandemic?

It has been nearly a year since this pandemic. It is not so easy to handle and has taken an emotional toll on everyone. Some of us might be struggling to focus during classes, are unwilling to attend online classes anymore, or even worrying about the pandemic and various health risks. Doesn’t it feel overwhelming?
That feeling you may get that you will break down one day and sink? Trust me I’ve felt the same. It has been a rollercoaster; at one moment we struggled to accept and process this pandemic and did our best to adjust, but it seems as if the strange feeling of ‘being trapped’ is coming back again.

Many Of Us Tend To Constantly Feel Guilty About Assignments And Not Self-Studying

In all this, did you stop doing the things that you love such as your hobbies? Can we take a moment to breathe, appreciate the transition from where we were to where we have reached? We never give ourselves enough credit, do we? Of course, there will always be lots of work to do which can get too much at times, but it is important to take a step back; to do things that make us feel better. According to Jill Bolte-Taylor, the physiological lifespan of emotion in the body and brain is only 90 seconds but can affect us if we keep pondering over them (especially negative emotions) for long.

Personally speaking, when it gets too much with studies, responsibilities, etc, I choose to not attend some classes; I can catch up with them later. Since it’s a pandemic, all the more reason we focus on our mental health. Why can’t we slow down and take things one at a time? We aren’t running a marathon, are we? When we’re sick, we prioritize our physical health, right? Why don’t we start to place our mental health first as well? People say statements like ‘you will get over it’, or ‘it’s just a phase’. Maybe it might be a phase but if it lasts for more than 2-3 days, know that it’s time to reach out and engage in self–healing behaviour.

Sometimes, it’s important to rejuvenate yourself by singing, breaking some rules, watching a movie, sitting outside in the sun, go out for a walk or any form of exercise and so on.

Lastly, don’t be so hard on yourself if you are not feeling okay; reach out for support so that you feel happy again. There is honestly nothing wrong with asking for help. It doesn’t mean that you are weak. Remember, it’s okay to not be okay, we are all in this together! Your feelings, thoughts, and emotions are valid.
