TW: Child sexual abuse
I have met hundreds of people in my life who have appreciated my work and have shown concern for the cause. But, what you see and hear is not always true. In this world, where people might be nice to your face will be the same people who won’t start a conversation about child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention at their home.
I remember I was once refused by a big company to conduct a workshop on the prevention of CSA for children because the corporate member felt it’s a “taboo” topic so “let’s avoid it.”
My intention though this is not to blame anyone but to showcase the reality of how people still avoid conversations about sex education or CSA. Despite India being a place where one in every two children are victims of sexual abused, and Indian children being the most cyberbullied in the world.
There are places, people, events where the conversation around this is still avoided just because it will make us as adults uncomfortable. Just imagine, how uncomfortable it must be for a 9-year-old girl who goes through sexual abuse, a 12-year-old boy who is sexually abused online in a gaming room, and many other instances.
Do we still want to shy away from such conversation with our children, a conversation that can help to prevent abuse and break the silence around the issue of CSA?
