Parents, Teach Your Children About Kindness Before You Preach Morality!

We Learn Important Lessons Of Life Within The Four Walls Of Our Homes

Unfortunately, all good lessons in life are learnt only when you do not have any other choice but to learn. But, what about moral values? Are they something that should be learnt because others want you to, or because they are worth it?

Most kids in Indian families are taught to respect their elders. The rationale that their parents give is that if you don’t respect elders, society will look down upon you. Nobody dares to teach their child that if some elderly relative of his or hers is not worth it, he or she should not be respected. It’s only when the child grows old and develops his own mental faculties that they start questioning the rationale behind all the learnings.

Again, if this grown-up is courageous enough to disrespect someone for a valid reason, the society and family end up playing the same card in a different way. This time it’s about the efforts that have been put into the upbringing of this grown-up, the debts of which cannot be repaid. While this is true, it doesn’t at all qualify as a reason for not questioning the rationale behind childhood learnings.

Moreover, children learn from what they observe and not through what is preached to them. Present-day parenting needs to explain the “why’s” of everything before they decide to teach something to their children.
