The Forgotten ‘What’ ‘Why’ And ‘Who’ Of Farmer Protests Amidst Twitter Outrage

As rightly said by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, “We have freedom of speech but no freedom after the speech”.

A tweet by pop-star apparently makes her a “porn-star.”

One tweet by pop-star Rihanna and Climate-activist Greta Thunberg and the entire nation got baffled.

A tweet and the whole nation became patriotic.

And this tweet was more than enough to make people realise that something massive is brewing in our country which the peaceful protest by farmers for over two months now and their vigour couldn’t make.

What happened in the national capital on the occasion of the 72nd Republic day was unacceptable. Today, everyone is blaming the farmers.

It seems that everyone has completely forgotten the peaceful agitation of farmers and the way they were struggling in harsh winters of Delhi. The irony is that the farmers, their protests, their demands are still no-where in the picture.

Nowadays, the spotlight is on the pop-singer Rihanna,climate-activist Greta Thunberg and their tweets in support of the farmers. The debate has begun, this will go on for some days now until it is replaced by something new. But the farmers will be there, fighting their battle because they know nobody cares about their lives. More than 170 people have died by now.

It seems that everyone has completely forgotten the peaceful agitation of farmers and the way they were struggling in harsh winters of Delhi. Representational image.

Be it US Elections, Black Lives Matter Protest or the violence which took place on U.S.Copital Hill, everyone tweeted about it. Everyone seemed very much concerned about US democracy.

However, when pop-singer Rihanna tweeted in support of the farmers, she was abused, harassed and labelled as a porn star. And one tweet of hers made the protest India’s “Internal matter”. How?

The first response to Rihanna’s tweet came from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Within hours, the Home Minister also joined the fray. Many celebs from Bollywood and sports fraternity-like Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Taapsee Pannu etc. took to Twitter and called it India’s internal matter using hashtags #Indiatogether #Indiaagainstpropaganda.

The way Indians retaliated to women who spoke out about the farmers’ protest is distressing. These women are getting harassment and rape threats for sharing their views. Morphed images of these women are being circulated online.

Now I realize why people call PM “visionary.” He also knows that he will come up with some absurd laws, people will retaliate at first but eventually, the laws will be enforced. Our PM has time to hold rallies to win upcoming West Bengal elections but no time to go and meet farmers once.

While the Indian Government wants to make the Internet a basic need or fundamental right of every citizen, the Internet was shut down on the borders of Delhi that are sites for the ongoing farmers’ protests. Internet was suspended around farmers’ protest sites and only the narrative of government was coming forward.

If Rihanna can be funded to speak in support of the farmers then why not the self-styled goddess of our country”Kangana Ranaut” for speaking in support of the government?

People who deliberately deviated from the pre-determined route on 26th Jan turned violent and caused mayhem must be identified and punished but the protest must go on until the demands are met.
