Quick Byte: Why Do We Commodify Affection On Valentine’s Day?

Shouldn’t we separate facts from fiction, real from reel both for character as well as existing beings? Do we need to express and articulate our affection for each other on a said date of a calendar? What is the purpose of sending and receiving gifts and why are they more important than anything else? How else would I impress my acceptance and understanding of an exercise aimed at commodifying our civility of being into an economics of pure profiteering?

This phenomenon fills us with a sense of passion and pride, consciously allocating our roles and duties of whether we would like to simply stay single or enter into an alliance of commitment. Somebody encroaching into my personal sphere shouldn’t be allowed to do so even in the wildest of their imaginations.

Nobody, for this matter. And why should they unnecessarily intervene and interfere by dictating the terms of reference as is being pointed to us by the chieftains of the dominant discourse — social, cultural, political and economic — capturing and controlling us at each and every stage?
