Have Things Changed Since The Feminist Wave Arrived In India?

India girl child

We all have come across the word ‘feminism’ at one some point in our lives, but the circumstances related with this word never changed completely. Previously, too, women were forced to work at home, cook, clean, look after their children and just limit themselves to the boundaries of their home. They were not allowed to go out and work or build their own career. But now, people say that with time, everything has changed. Now, women, too, work outside like men, build their careers and live according to their wishes. So many things have upgraded. But is it true?

Even today, so many parents abort or leave their female child in the dustbins, on the roads or kill them when they are born. Just because they are girls. There is still so much discrimination of treatment for a boy and a girl, a man and a woman. India was always being a male-dominated society and this is accepted as a culture here.

Though it’s the 21st century, women are not completely safe in any field of life or any job, In fact, they are not provided with proper education. Still, there are many families who marry their girls at a very early age, without providing them with any proper education or knowledge. This seems similar to Sati Daho Pratha, in which girl children were married to old men and when their husbands would die, they’d also be asked to burn themselves in the fire of their chita.

Even today, many people with narrow-minded thinking don’t allow their girls to set their own goals and build their careers. These people always create a hurdle between a girl’s career and her marriage.

There are many women today who have joined men in defence, at teaching institutions, companies, banks and even in hotels as chefs. Not only that, in politics, too, women are not behind.

Pratibha Patil is a former woman President of India. And now, Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister of West Bengal. In the past also, women have proved themselves in so many other fields.

Bachendri Pal is the first woman to climb Mount Everest.

Sushma Swaraj was the former Minister of External Affairs of India.

Sarojini Naidu was called the ‘Nightingale of India’.

Rani Laxmibai from Jhansi was a freedom fighter.

There are a lot of examples of feminine heroism, but the word ‘equality’ is still unchanged. So, the Prime Minister of our country, Narendra Modi has proposed a scheme of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also proposed different schemes such as Kanyashree and Rupashree.

Despite all these changes, there are so many mischievous crimes that are committed against women. Between 2012 to 2021, the number of rape cases has raised so much. Family members perpetrate domestic violence on women, and this is a common and heinous crime. Dowry is one of the major reasons for domestic violence.

So, things have not completely changed in a woman’s life. Her previous condition and today’s condition hasn’t changed so much. But this condition should be changed as Navratri, Durga puja, Saraswati puja, Laxmi puja, all are performed by people in India. They respect all these goddesses and with much sincerity.

The Laxmis, Saraswatis and Durgas who live in our society should be respected and permitted to live free from the cage of fear, pressure, violence etc. Women are an important part of our society and also the earth. Even our planet and our country are called Mother Earth and Mother Indian respectively.

So, please respect women and ensure equality for them.
