Having been born and brought up in an open-minded family, I rarely found anything patriarchal inside my home. However, the outside world is not the same. I have heard so many things in my life that irritate me as a woman: “You should learn how to cook,” “Be more like a lady,” “Why don’t you put on make-up,” “Get married before you turn 30,” etc.
The best thing was (and still is) that my family and I never give a damn about what society wants from us. I completed my studies in the field I’d chosen for myself, worked hard for almost nine years (and still working hard), got married when I wanted to (at 32) and with whom I wanted.
I still hear things from people (unfortunately, mostly from women) such as: “Why don’t you wear sindoor and bindi,” “Where is your mangalsutra,” “Why don’t you have babies as it’s already too late,” “You are so lucky your husband cooks for you,” and so on. I avoid all the comments and continue to live the life I want.
