How this UK-based Charity is promoting early diagnosis of deafness in India

As an endeavour to work for society, a UK-based not-for-profit organization, IDEAL Charity is involved with advancing the education of deaf persons in less developed countries particularly by provision of education, training, equipment and funding. The charity emphasizes on hearing impairment in young children.

Charity is not just recommended by all religions; it is required of every financially stable good human being. Giving charity to those who deserve it is part of the character of a religious human being. Charity giving is one of the pillars of strength in all religious practices; it is an obligation for those who have received their wealth from God to respond to those members of the community in need. All religions encourage the sharing of wealth with others and help people to stand on their own and become productive members of society.

Recently, on the occasion of World Hearing Day, the charity announced the release of its awareness short film and initiative “Sunoge to Bologe” in India through an online event held over Zoon to promote the importance of early diagnosis of deafness and the need for the universal newborn hearing screening program.

The film was meant to promote the importance of early diagnosis of deafness because there is no universal newborn hearing screening program in India and children show up to the doctors after 4-5 years of age when the golden period of speech development has passed.

Dr Narveshwar Sinha, Chairman of IDEAL Charity who was the host and organizer of the event addressed the audience by saying, “We need to somehow get all newborn babies a 2-minutes’ hearing screening test (otoacoustic emission), for example, intervening at the point when the baby is born (if hospital delivery) or at the point of immunisation (if it is out of hospital delivery). If deafness is diagnosed very early on in life the child can be treated e.g. by giving hearing aids or cochlear implant, they can start speaking normally.”

Through this initiative, he hopes that the Government of India supports any initiative in this direction. Therefore, Principal Health Secretaries and Directors of the National Health Mission of various states and union territories of India were also invited to attend the event as they will be the major players in taking this agenda forward in their constituencies.

Apart from the major works in India, the Charity has also carried out projects in South Africa and Uganda. In India, the Charity has done events in the states of Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
