Are You Aware Of The New Driving Rules Under Motor Vehicle Act, 2019?

Today driving has become the most important part of our life whether it is two wheeler or four wheeler vehicles. In India the government is taking very strict measures regarding the people who are caught driving without a driving license. These kinds of activities can lead to heavy fines or be sent to jail also.

In India, all these activities regarding vehicles are governed by the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 but now the government has introduced its revised version commonly known as the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill of 2019. There are many new clauses included in this new act which all the drivers who are driving vehicles on the public roadway should know about it.

1.Penalties for driving without a driving license

The new law raises the penalty for driving a vehicle without a license or without authorization from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000. The minimum penalty for a person driving without a driving license has been raised to Rs 5,000, and the fine for driving while disqualified has been raised from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000.

2.Penalties for not wearing a helmet

If you are caught driving without a helmet then according to this new law you have to pay a fine of Rs 1000.

3.Penalties for drink and drive

The new rules also increase the punishment for a drink and driving in jail for a period of 6 months and/or a fine of Rs 10,000 for the first offense, and jail for a 2 years period and/or a fine of Rs 15,000 for the second offense. 

Furthermore, the new rules also gave authority to the state governments to appoint any individual or firm as the compliance agency for detecting and penalizing these drunken drivers.

4.Penalties for minor drivers

In the case of an offense done by a minor, the bill has been amended to include a new clause in which the guardians of the vehicle owners will be held responsible for the activities done by him or her. 

A fine of Rs 25,000 will be imposed, along with three years in jail and the registration of vehicles also being canceled.

  5.Penalties for Expired driving license

According to the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act of 2019, a person can apply for a driving license renewal one year before it expires and up to one year after it expires. This means that if your driver’s license expires in November 2020, then you have to renew it between November 2019 and November 2021. 

If you apply for renewal after a year of driving license expiry, then you will be asked to take the driving test again to get a renewed license.
