As Parties Fight Among One Another For Power, It’s Covid That Is Winning The Contest

The boiling conflict between Didi and Modi has certainly heated Bengal’s weather. A series of political rallies and satirical comments has left the state in turmoil. While the world is struggling with yet anther wave of Covid-19, Bengal seems to be completely engaged in the mega festival of democracy. India is set to witness the Vidhan Sabha elections in the coming month in the states of West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Assam, as well as in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The Election Commission of India (EC) announced the poll dates for the Assembly elections that will be held for 126 constituencies in Assam, 140 in Kerala, 234 in Tamil Nadu, 294 in West Bengal and 30 in Puducherry as the terms of their assemblies are set to come to an end in May and June.

The Assam Assembly election is slated be held in three phases: on March 27, April 1 and April 6, as announced by the EC. The final counting of votes for the Assam Assembly election 2021 will be conducted on May 2. The BJP will be fighting from 92 out of 126 seats, whereas the AGP and UPPL will be contesting for 26 and eight seats respectively. The Congress is fighting from 90 seats, while the rest of the allies will contest for 36 seats.

The West Bengal Assembly election will be held over eight phases, with the first one on March 27 and the last one on April 29. The result will be declare on May 2. For the last 40 years, since 1980s, West Bengal has largely been dominated by Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Other leading parties of West Bengal for the Assembly Elections 2021 are  the AITC, BJP, CIP etc. It is for the first time that PM Modi’s BJP has hogged the limelight in the state as several TMC leaders have joined the saffron Party.

Kerala Assembly election will be held in a single phase on April 6, and the counting of votes will take place on May 2. Kerala is currently ruled by the Left Democratic Front which is led by the Communist Party of India. The Kerala unit of the coalition comprises the BJP, Bharath Dharma Jana Sena and a number of smaller parties.

Tamil Nadu Assembly election started on April 6 and the counting of votes will be done on May 2. The election in this state was also held in a single phase. The Congress-DMK and BJP-AIADMK alliance has brought major groups to contest against each other. The incumbent party in Tamil Nadu is All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the chief minister is Edappadi K Palaniswami.

Puducherry Assembly election was held in a single phase on April 6 and the final result will be declared by the evening of May 2, 2021. Puducherry is currently under President’s rule. The National Democratic Alliance may form the government by winning 17-21 seats out of 30 member Assembly, while Congress may get around 12 seats.
