We live in a society where personalities such as Baba Ramdev consider homosexuality a disease that can get cured with the help of yoga. Yes, “we need to talk.” A homosexual person is someone who is sexually attracted to people of their own sex. On September 6, 2018, the Supreme Court of India refuted a part of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, making homosexuality legal in India.
But India is still not ready to accept homosexuality. This is a society where you are either male or female, otherwise, you will not be accepted by them. When one recognises who they really are, it becomes hard for society to accept them and then even harder for them. Pragya Pallavi is one of the bold musicians whose music video Lingering Wine was stopped from airing on national television simply because it showed a lesbian couple kissing. India as a society of conservatives is not ready to accept homosexuality.
Khajuraho’s erotic sculptures speak for themselves. We had a past that recognised nearly every form of sexual intercourse. One of the chapters of Kamasutra talks about homosexuality and the transgender community. Even in Valmiki’s Ramayana, Hanuman is said to have seen Rakshasa women kissing other women. When our past has accepted them as a part of our society, why can’t we?
