Indian Muslim after Shaheen Baag

One year has left since the Shaheen Baag protest was over. The protest was politically significant and led many changes in entire social life of Indian Muslim. Especially, it redefined the image and role of Muslim in India basis of historical past. Muslim in India has been witness three different phases of their Image and identity. Before 1990, Indian Muslim has been a secular community; they used to participate in every social and cultural activity along with Hindu and other religious community. This period has made an important contribution in India’s social and cultural diversity and also in India’s secular notion. Along with social and cultural engagement, in this period, image of Indian Muslim not just encounter the Hindu’s mejoritarianism but also claim their identity as equal to Hindu and other social and cultural identity. But, after 1990 when the Indian government had introduced new liberal economic policy is known for the raise of anti Muslim sentiment across India.  The new liberal economic policy which was first step to open the Indian market for international business has brought out many changes in social and political condition. Especially in the case of society in the same period religious nationalism has raised aggressively. This entire social condition the identity of Muslim emerged as most vulnerable and anti Hindu in India. New liberal economy on the other side also created a new synthesis of global Muslim identity which was more sensational and aggressive to criminalise Muslim’s identity. During the same period, several communal riots happened across India, all these incidents rigidly narrate the story of anti Muslim social and political condition in India. The raise of Hindu nationalist forces during this period was the result of increasing communal classes and growing criminal image of Muslim in India. The raise of Hindu nationalist political forces on the one hand and the implementation of new liberal economic policy by Indian government on the other hand not just manipulated historical fact to create social and cultural rigidity  but also criminalise religious identity.

Due to strong anti Muslim sentiment and government’s bias approach, the condition of Muslim in this entire period has been drastically changed and led an anti Muslim consensus among Hindu. Many reports suggest due to the Muslim identity, highest number of capital punishment has been awarded to Muslim only and still now thousands of Muslims are in the jail in different false cases. Besides, hate against Muslims, Mob lynching and discrimination in government policy all these condition highlight how has the social and political condition of Indian Muslim’s condition been decreased due to the religious identity? But after Modi came into the power, anti muslim taken new shape and Modi government introduced a regressive policy to attack over the muslim community. The citizenship Amendment Act and National Registrar of Citizen was a part the same policy. Due to growing militant attack over the Muslim community by the government, this had been resulted a widespread anti CAA and NRC protest by Muslim community. Shaheen Baag located in Delhi became an epicentre of this protest and received global attention. This protest in nature was horizontal that not only redefine the identity of Indian Muslim but also claiming their spaces. Leading participation of Muslim women in this protest has broken taboo for women in Muslim community by creating their secular image. The generosity of is protest has made a contribution in anti new liberalization protest and also encountered the stereotype image of Muslim constructed by the Indian state after 1990. Besides, participation of people from different communities under the leadership of Muslim women defined this protest ideologically more grounded and secular to reconstitute India’s secular notion. At the beginning of protest, protesters were not just rejecting the fundamentalism within Indian Muslim but also made this site as ideologically anti religious and anti stereotype of any Identity. The protest allowing participation from all communities created a new sign of social and cultural politics of Indian Muslim to challenge not just religious fundamentalism within Muslim and location women in Indian society.
