What Was The Naxalite Movement?

Recently, 22 Indian soldiers were killed by the Naxalite in Chhattisgarh and 31 are hospitalized.  I am sure the following questions are also coming to your mind, so let’s find answers to these:

Why did the Naxalite movement start in India? What are Naxalites fighting for? Who was Charu Majumdar?

What Was The Naxalbari Movement?

Naxalbari is a place in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. There a peasant uprising took place in 1967 under the leadership of a group of young communists who belonged to CPI (M).

The Naxal movement, which began in 1967, is still present in various pockets of India.

The Naxalite movement represented the revolutionary aspirations of members of the communist party of India (Marxist). They emphasized the need for an armed struggle, placing the peasantry at the forefront of the movement. The communist in the Naxalbari region forcibly occupied lands belonging to the richer zamindars.

The movement was lauded by China, which saw it as an opportunity to create a base from where they could launch the revolution in India. There was an alarming increase in the intensity of the movement the Naxalite led by Charu Majumdar called for an “armed struggle” and an encirclement on the cities of the model of the Chinese revolution. They even coined an absolutely Anti-National sloganchairman Mao is our chairman“.

In 1969, Charu Majumdar, Kanu Sanyal and others broke away from CPI(M) and formed a separate party called the communist party of India (Marxist-Leninist). This party declared that democracy in India had failed and the goal of socialism could be achieved only through armed struggle.

They justify the use of violence for seizing land from landlords and distributing them among poor peasants. Charu Majumdar and his followers labelled their movement as a “popular protest against injustice and exploitation“. In fact, they aimed to strengthen India’s democratic structure and establishing a communist dictatorship through violence and guerilla activities.

Charu Majumdar died in 1972 but the movement is alive till now.  Poor peasants and landless labourers drew inspiration from Charu Majumdar and they formed armed groups such as the People’s War Group (PWG), Maoist communist centre (MCC) and CPI-ML (liberation). Hence, the Naxalite movement is a threat to internal security.

Measures To Deal With Naxalite Movement

1. The centre in the state government should also speed up the social-economic development in the region affected by the Naxal violence.

2. To gain the confidence of local people land needs to be distributed among four seasons and funds be made available to poor artisans.

3. Development programs with a focus on employment generation need to be implemented.
