Quick Byte: Taking A Look At The Deadly Black Fungus Which Is Affecting COVID Patients

Everyone in India knows about the terrible, dangerous, and rare disease called Mucormycosis or Black Fungus. It is a light-weight micrograph of a mature sporangium of a Mucor fungus. People can catch this disease by encountering the fungal spores within their environment or through a cut, scrape, burn, or any other sort of skin trauma.

The Health Ministry has observed that this disease is prevalent among COVID-19 patients who are under recovery or have already recovered from it. The fungus can spread through the nose and eyes to the brain. The treatment consists of removing all dead and infected tissues. In some rare cases, a patient might end up losing their upper jaw or even an eye.

The cure involves a 4–6-weeks course of intravenous antifungal therapy. Diabetes is one of the major contributors towards the deadly disease, suggests ICMR. Hence, COVID-19 patients who are diabetic require utmost care. Amphotericin B Liposomal is used for the treatment of this infection.

With the rise in demand, this medicine is not readily in the market but the high mortality rate of mucormycosis has increased the health sector to ramp up the production to combat this fatal disease. So, let us all keep safe and avoid being afflicted by this dangerous fungus.
