Cricket In The Time Of Covid 19 : Nadia Remains Invincible To Win The CAB T-20 League

Nadia District Champion

Ankita Burman’s 51 and a three-wicket haul from off-spinner Sushmita Ganguly lead Nadia to thrash Hooghly in CAB Women’s Inter-District T20 Tournament Final by 81 runs at Jadavpur University Saltlake Campus Ground.

Nadia skipper Mita Paul decided to bat first, after winning the toss. The openers made a blistering start, taking 20 runs from the very first over. They maintained the momentum in the upcoming over, to put up 51 runs in the first six overs, without losing any wicket. Skipper Mita Paul hit 31 from 24 balls (4*4), adding 59 runs for the first wicket along with Ankita. Shreya Dutta gave Hooghly their first break when Mita was sent back to the pavilion. She went to hoick a full toss but gave a simple catch to her counterpart, Prativa Rana.

After the fall of Mita who has hit two half-centuries in the tournament, Nadia lost another two wickets in the next over, leaving 61/3 in the 8th over. Ankita, on the other hand, kept the innings going, with the singles while founding the boundaries. Ankita completed her half-century in 48 balls and hit 4 boundaries in her innings. At the same time, she added 39 runs with Sushmita in 7 overs while another 38 runs for the next wicket to take the total to 140 runs.

In reply, Hoogly’s innings was a sharp contrast, compared to that of Nadia’s. Nadia started with spinners from both the end. Skipper herself bowled two tight overs while Jhumia Khatun and Sushmita operated from the other end. It never looked like Hoogly was in the chase. They lost wickets at regular intervals. Sansthita Biswas, who played a crucial knock of 39 in the semifinal against Siliguri, was sent back within the power-play, while they managed to score only 16 runs. The variety of spinners made life horrible for the opponent.

If off-spinner Sushmita Biswas was the wrecker-in-chief with her three wickets in 4 overs, left-arm spinner Koel Sutradhar chipped in with 2 wickets in her allotted 4 overs. None of the batters except Prativa Rana (15) and Sansthita Biswas (13) touched the double-figure mark. Akita was declared as the Player of Match, for her 51.

This was one of the two tournaments that were organized by CAB for Women cricketers amidst the cold eyes of COVID-19 situation. 18 districts were divided into 6 groups, while the best 8 made it to the quarterfinals. While Nadia defeated North 24 Parganas by 18 runs in one semifinal, Hoogly thrashed Siliguri by 39 runs in their way to the final.

Brief Score: NADIA DSA: 140/5 (Ankita Burman 53, Rajanya Maity  2/15) defeated HOOGHLY DSA: 59/9 (Prative Rana 15,Sushmita Ganguly 3/11) by 81 runs.
