Pride Month Is Here; Do You Know About The Revolutionary Stone Wall Uprising?

Pride month takes place usually in the month of June every year to acknowledge and celebrate the LGBTQ community, it all started with the Stonewall Uprising on 28th June 1969 the day when Stonewall Inn, a well known shady and crowded gay-friendly bar in Greenwich Village, Manhattan was raided by the cops, the inn was raided multiple times before the historical event. At that time solicitation of homosexual relations were considered illegal in New York City and other parts of the country.

But that day was a milestone, when the police barged into the bar and arrested a few people and forced them into the police vehicles, that was when New York’s queer community got furious and took a stand for themselves after years of harassment by the police authorities and the protest lasted for several days, these riots sparked the origins of Pride Month and gave a rise to a new era of revolution and paved way for radical groups like Gay Liberation Front.

To mark the 1st anniversary of the landmark event, in 1970 a march was organized known as ‘Gay-Pride’ to contradict the prevailing assumption of shame and disregard towards the queer community, attracting a massive amount of people.

Since its origin, Pride has always been an amalgamation of politics and celebration, it served as a catalyst for LGBTQ rights and protection against homophobia, raising awareness for HIV and fighting for equality through similar marches. Pride month is largely credited as being started by bisexual activist Brenda Howard who played a major role in the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade which is celebrated every year on June 28 to mark the significance of Pride.
