Tragic Or Terrific? Students Respond To The News Of Cancelled Board Exams

In this advanced era of science and technology, when we claim that we have discovered a lot of things, no doubt these inventions have made our life easier to a great extent, but it’s really surrealistic to see the world helpless against this pandemic. Now moving forward, as we all know, our Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has cancelled the board exams this year.

Following this announcement, many states including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha and Telangana decided to not conduct board exams this year either. It simply means students will be promoted and granted marks according to their previous performance.

Two Contrasting Replies To The News

When the news of the exam cancellation reached my cousins, their reaction differed based on their previous academic performance and exam competency. One of my cousin was sitting silent. I know she was disheartened to hear this ‘tragic news’. When I asked her about the decision, she replied in low voice, “Exams should have been conducted at all cost.”

I could feel her pain hidden in her words, as she was working hard for the exams, day in day out. She added with a dull smile, “I’m not alone in this ‘sorrow’ as most of the bright students are going through the same pain.”

On the other hand, another cousin of mine was on cloud nine after hearing this bombastic news’. When he was asked the same question, he smiled smugly and said, “I consider it the right decision at the right time by the government.”

My Views

This is a depressing time for students who are the cream of the crop in their colleges and are strive hard for board exams. Exams are necessary and important for students as they prepare for it round the year. Taking their health into consideration, the Board has taken this step, but still, it can create problems for bright students as they won’t be able to display their abilities.

But I’m pretty sure the CBSE and other State Boards will come up with the best solution. I hope the cancellation of board exam won’t influence their future. I can assure all students that no matter what the situation is, there is always a silver lining in the black clouds and whatever happens, happens for the better.
