Starting with the meaning of sexism, it is nothing but stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination based on sex. Sexism is the topic I am most indignant about. I would shed light upon the instances which highlight sexism in routine life. These are so common that we have started to normalise these statement. But it is important to stop them because it eventually affects the mindset of people and forms the wrong basis for society.
I am sure the majority of us have heard statements or even say these statements. To highlight a few — women gossip, do household chores, pink is for women, all women are gold diggers, don’t cry like women, women can’t wear short clothes, women have to bear children and drop their work, a perfect woman/man or even the saying that girls play with barbies and boys play with legos, etc.
These phrases are in the mouth of every person. I would like to strongly point out that these are not facts; these are just some very sexist statements. In fact, when people say that you cannot beat a girl, that is also a sexist statement. Girls and boys are equal on all grounds; neither is superior. If you cannot beat a girl, you cannot beat a boy as well.
The statements I mentioned above merely come from a reserved mindset. Every person has the right to express emotions regardless of their gender. Every person has the liberty to choose the colour of their choice; play with whatever toy you want. There may be a slight inclination of a particular gender to exercise a certain trait, but it cannot be generalised; majority and minority both form the society.
Most of the times, we are taught or instructed to behave in a specific manner when we are children; this is an entirely wrong approach. Individuals should recognise on their own what their calling is, what occupation they would like to opt for, what choices they have to make and what type of clothes they want to wear.
Sexism can be ended by firstly changing our own mindsets by studying various instances and understanding that there is no concrete logic behind them. These are not biological facts but just generalised statements built on the wrong grounds. I request all my readers to increasingly spread awareness about sexism as this little step would greatly help society and remove discrimination.
