“When The Health Centre Itself Is Sick, How Will It Treat Our Village?”

The government medical system of Jais, Amethi, is dying in its rural areas. For the health of children, women and adolescent girls, health sub-centres built in villages at the cost of lakhs of rupees are facing the brunt of poverty. The operation of health facilities at the Center has not been opened for many years. Women and adolescent girls of nearby villages are being forced to wander far and wide to access healthcare,

A health sub-centre and an additional primary health centre were built for a population of 1,000, but the buildings have become dilapidated due to a lack of maintenance and negligence of the medical department. Seeing its broken gate while entering the primary health sub-centre of Udwa, it can be guessed that even after 70 years of Independence, steps taken by the government to restore health services in rural areas have proved to be insufficient.

Broken gates, garbage piled up and missing doors and windows — if this is the condition of the only health centre in our village, how will it treat us? Representational image.

The condition of the only health sub-station at Bahadurpur block area, located in the entire Jiah Singh village, is so distressing that its maintenance can be easily gauged. There is garbage lying in the rooms of the centre and the entire premises. Doors in many of the rooms are broken or missing, while windowpanes are also missing. There is dirt in the toilets and a pile of garbage lies near the hand pump installed for drinking water. Trees have also grown in the premises.

Villagers say that this sub-centre was built about 10 years ago. Residents of the village, namely Shri Krishna, Mohammad Ibrar, Bikku Singh and Pappu say that for years, neither any official has come to visit the health sub-centre nor has any of its facilities been started. A complaint was filed by the villagers and presented to District Magistrate Prashant Sharma two years ago for the renovation and opening up of the hospital, but till now, no hearing has taken place, and neither has the hospital been started.
