Shades Of Grey: A Case For Cooperative Federalism

india lockdown

Why are states and the centre not working together on special economic incentives for those impacted and impaired by a pandemic like COVID?

Separately announcing sops and schemes are irrelevant as it is the centre which has to take the larger share of responsibility during a national crisis by providing access to constituents in terms of material and resources through which the states can make a difference to their population.

Why is the centre so miffed and antagonized when it is them who should be held responsible as per National Disaster Management Act? Embarrassing and exposing states one after the other has to be prevented for the betterment of democracy in the country.

It is not about a particular episode and engagement but about the collective cooperative federalism defining the spirit of our constitution. COVID could have been restricted if not for this tug of war between different agencies and organs of the centre and states.

Why is it so. especially when both are mandated to work for the greater public good? This isn’t about settling scores, ego and ambitions – something which is being missed by the political leadership of parties across the spectrum. Let’s bring the curtains down on everything which is black and white as reality is independently divine.
