Quick Bytes: Delhi Govt Announces Sports University, But Is It Enough?

The recent announcement of a Sports University by the Delhi Government is a welcome step in encouraging and motivating students looking for scope in the sports of their choice. Enhancing their capacity and potential for discovering and delivering their best on and off the field competing and chasing titles in a true sportsman style and spirit. Harnessing the sporting talent of the individual should become the primary goal of sports administrators and coaches as for the shortage and crunch of basic available resources impairing and impacting individual and team presentation and performance at different levels.

Does it make any difference to persons at the upper echelons apart from their one-line sentences and statements? Sports Ministry in consultation with different state governments should roll out facilities benefitting a pool of players who apart from making headlines, make us proud in all respects. Look at how we react to learning about someone scoring a gold, silver, and bronze medal and trophy at the Asian, Commonwealth, and Olympic games.

Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, etc being some notable who with their sheer determination, dedication and devotion established their place and position. I believe for the training to kick start early, it is essential to appoint all those in the decision-making bodies and committees who come from a background say in sports.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games were blemished with Suresh Kalmadi, financial discrepancies, and corruption. Sports in India need to be administered by stalwarts who know the game in and out. Inaugurating a sports curriculum or for that matter, a university will depend on the adaptability and acceptance of those governing the said institutions and associations.
