Quick Byte: Why Do We Seek Validation From Others?

We live in a society where we are constantly judged by others. We often question our choices based on societal standards and expectations, to an extent where we need others’ approval on almost every aspect of our lives. The constant need for validation and seeking others’ approval arises from a lack of self-esteem.

When a person is not satisfied with themselves and the choices they make, they put others’ opinions and approval of them above their own opinion. Such a person has a constant urge to seek acceptance and recognition from others.

Since time immemorial, our society has taught us to seek approval of our family members, otherwise it is not socially acceptable. Many a times, depending on validation from others disempowers us. It stops us from accepting our authentic selves, living life on our own terms and according to our own choices.

At times, depending on others’ validation can lead to a downward spiral. When an individual’s well-being and existence depends on living up to others’ expectations and pleasing them all the time, they tend to forget their own purpose.

They end up setting unrealistic standards for themselves, which can lead to anxiety, drug abuse and reckless behavior.

When others’ perception defines one’s worth, one tries to chase after whatever one feels will get them that acceptance. The process of seeking validation from others only leads to more internal hopelessness and pain.

Seeking validation from others is immobilising millions of people.
