The whole country went on to celebrate the first medal which India won in the ongoing Olympics at Tokyo.
The silver medal, no less than a gold for us, that our very own Mirabai Chanu won, in the 49 kg category of women’s weightlifting, made every single Indian proud.
By now, another northeastern sports woman and a boxer, Lovlina Borgohain, hailing from Assam, has secured a bronze medal for India.
It’s so heartwarming to see people celebrate these athletes and recognise them as one of them. However, as soon as the Olympics end and the dust settles down, how is the rest of India going to treat a person from the northeast?
Which inappropriate word will be used to describe a person from the northeast? Is it Chinese? Or momo wala? Or a new name which surfaced during the pandemic: Corona virus?
It’s a question that every individual should ask themselves: how fair is it to call someone a foreigner in their own land?
It can’t be denied that racism is everywhere in India and this needs to stop. It needs to stop for the greater good of every individual whose confidence was publicly killed, in broad daylight, using pathetic, racist remarks.
Remember this, when the whole country was busy making teams on Dream 11, it was northeastern athletes who brought medals for India… made India proud. Jai hind!
