There is nothing new about the fact that humanity is no more. Recently, Assam has witnessed one such dreadful incident where a young college girl named Nandita Saikia, who belonged to the Lakhimpur district of Assam was stabbed in daylight on the 21st of August, 2021.
The murderer’s name is Rintu Sharma, who had apparently proposed the victim for marriage. However, the poor victim committed the bigger ‘crime’, saying ‘No’ to it.
Poor Nandita was pursuing her undergraduate course. Can you believe that she was attacked with a machete at a bus stop? Along with her, one of her classmates and her father were also present with her at that time. They also sustained deep injuries and the three of them were taken immediately to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital.

Unfortunately, later Nandita was shifted to Dibrugarh’s Assam Medical College and hospital. The medical College stopped charging for her treatment as a sign of humanity. However, as her injuries were so severe, she was shifted again to undergo further treatment on her injuries at Brahmaputra Diagnostic Hospital in Dibrugarh.
Yet, she succumbed to her injuries and couldn’t survive which leads to the very important question that we all should address – Is the cost of saying ‘No’ assault and death? Nevertheless, this is not a new case irrespective of the context, most of the barbaric crimes against women are the results of saying ‘NO’ to men.
Nandita was a student of Moridhal College in Dhemaji. The Principal of the college profoundly regretted the loss of such a young talent. He described her as a “good girl and brilliant student.” She was an art fanatic, a promising actress, dancer and recitation performer. She was also skilled in handicrafts as well.
On the other hand, Rintu Sharma who is an employee at the same college, Moridhal College, where Nandita was a student. He was a Grade 4 employee and was arrested on the day of the incident itself.
All of the eminent personalities from Assam had voiced out their anger including actress Aimee Baruah, Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and so on have conveyed their condolences.
End number of protests have started to take place in the streets and on various social media platforms too. All Assam Students Union (AASU) initiated a protest in Dhemaji demanding a severe punishment meted out to the criminal and also to assure the Assamese community of its security.
Twitter is also flooded with petitions to the establishments asking them for rapid justice to be done as justice delayed is justice denied. Numerous local politicians and journalists have also prolonged their condolences to the mourning family. Demands for capital punishment for the defendant have since improved in intensity.
Don’t you think it is high time that crimes against women need to be addressed in fast-track mode? Equal rights and fundamental rights with great pomp and show have been declared in the constitution. Ironically, the daughters of the land suffer from killings and viciousness every single day.
