What ‘Little Things’ Taught Me About Love And Relationships

I started watching Little Things in 2016 when it came out on YouTube. It’s about a sub-urban cohabitating couple, sticking with each other through the highs and lows. Sounds like another rom-com, right?

But here’s how it’s different. It’s not going out on the streets well dressed and magically finding your “missing puzzle piece”, in the rain, with music playing in the background where every single thing is just “perfect'”. It was nothing of that sort.

It’s about an upper middle class working couple, being in love, living a city life, a simple life like all of us, having differences and being okay with the indifferences, making tough choices, putting themselves first and so much more. Most importantly, it’s about a couple who wasn’t “giving up on each other” and kept “choosing each other over and over again”.

By the end of the series, they talk about why their relationship worked, and they said, “It’s because we believed in ‘solving things’ rather than just throwing it all away.” They were talking about the “dealbreakers in a relationship”, to which Dhruv (the guy) said, “We aren’t playing ‘Jenga’ that you pull out a piece and the whole tower collapses, we will figure it out.”

The show was about having simple quality conversations, no fancy “Instagram love”, where everything is aesthetically perfect, finding the joy in the “little things”. Because isn’t that what life is about, “the little things that matter the most to us”.

I just finished watching the last season, and I’m in happy tears. This hits so close to home, always strikes a chord. Just so beautiful.

We watch so many things, meet so many people, but how many such encounters leave an imprint on us? It’s been 6 long years of this show and it ended. So much changed in my life too. I started watching it when I was seeing someone, today I’m not and I still relate to it—the true essence of “relationships”, “being in love”, helping each other grow.

The couple in the show were having a discussion: “How do you know if you’re the one, the soulmate?” To this, Kavya (the girl) replies, “You’re always going to miss out on something, why not just be happy with what you have and make the most out of it.”

The best part about the show was the real conversations that it had. I felt it in my bones, quite literally. The love they had was magical—in a generation where “love” is limited to tinder/bumble swipes and is an overused word used to people’s conveniences.

Dhruv and Kavya taught us that love is so much more. It’s about being there for each other when the going gets tough, not calling it quits because it’s “inconvenient”, making the other person “your person”.

It’s never easy or what they show in quintessential rom-coms where the guy gets the girl and it’s just happiness and never the lows. It’s a bittersweet feeling; it takes a lot to let the relationship grow and flourish. But that’s the beauty of it, right? As the saying goes, “nothing good ever comes easy”.
